Madoc's Shields I produce all manner of shields that meet the requirements for Vicus use. The specifications and authenticty for Vicus shields I believe are higher than those required for other Iron age groups, which will mean they are suitable for use anywhere. I would point out that these are RE-ENACTMENT shields and not museum quality items, although they have been ordered and used by Museums. I can construct using planks and bronze edging, if required. I use 9mm exterior plywood as the basic material, cut to shape. Although I can use thicker or thinner wood as required. Depending your preference, I can cloth cover the front or back or leave the wood bare (in which case it will be planked and oiled). I will make anything from a small round to a full size iron age body shield. Bosses are now the heavy gauge, fully hemispherical type with no spin marks present. |

![]() Edged are leather covered and sewn into place with linen thread. I can use "rawhide" instead, or even metal edging, but will not use tacked on dog chew. ![]() Handgrips are now applied hardwood only, in the light that no metal gripped shields have been found in this country. The boss hole is leather lined again and the grip bound with leather or cloth. All rivets use copper alloy washers that are handcut. ![]() Many of our women, and kids, use small shields, the round variety which are also used as "parma" by the standard bearers and our archers. 24" seems to be about the right size for these sort of shields. ![]() Like all the shields, these have edged grip holes, applied handles and are oiled and "planked". Prices start at £30 for a small round or "hide" shaped shield, up to £60 for a full body shield. (active Vicus members only) I can now make curves scutum blanks at cost (active Vicus members only) for about £20. |
