Making and fitting metal shield edging

What you will need:
  • Angle grinder (or a Dremmel with cutting disc)
  • Clamps
  • A wooden former the same thickness as the shield
  • Files and emery cloth
  • Sheet steel or brass. It needs to be thin enough to bend.
  • Rivets or soft metal rod



Creating the edge
  1. Measure circumference of shield and divide by number of strip lengths
  2. Cut strips to shape and to correct lengths using grinder. Remove all burs and smooth edges with emery cloth and files
  3. Bend to shape over former of same thickness as shield
  4. Rivet to shield using the rivets or cut lengths of the rod. You won't need washers as there is metal on both sides.
