. This is not an exhaustive work by any means. It is an attempt by our historical recreation society to publish some much needed information on clothing and equipment in use in the Iron Age. We've tried not to be paralysed by the limited evidence, in some instances, and make no excuses for using evidence from other periods, before and after, or other contemporary cultures to allow us to bridge the gap to create what we think your average Briton would be wearing and using. Of course, all this primarily aimed at the re-enactor but that's what we are. We're wearing and using this equipment year in and year out. It is important to note that much re-enactment equipment is "over-engineered" and probably too perfect. The original helmets are very much thinner, swords are taken to an edge and much lighter, shields are made in a different way and I am sure they didn't buy their linen from shops. We are 21st century people living in a 21st century world. How our British ancestors thought and acted are a mystery to us, they wrote nothing down and we know next to nothing about their religion or intimate details of their lives. Some of their methods of making objects make no sense to us, look wrong to our modern eye or are uncomfortable to wear and use. Like all modern re-enactors, you'll find that people won't make or wear things that they do not like. I am sure that if an Iron age person came to see us, then they would find it all rather strange. All of the articles here are written from that perspective. We try to get things as "accurate" as we can, within the constraints of cost, availability and complexity.
