![]() The Vicus is an Iron age and early Roman re-enactment society that interprets history through the media of experimental archaeology, reconstruction and living history. We hold events throughout the entire year, not just seasonally, that are both public and private in nature. Our public events are usually at places that are historically right or themed for our period. Private events can involve combat in woodland environments and craft skill exchanges. A 'Vicus' is a settlement that grows outside of Roman military bases to cater to the needs of the soldiers (and their money). Likely to have originally been of a temporary nature, these settlements quickly grow into communities and later into permanent towns. Our Society looks to simulate this aspect where the Roman and British cultures merge. |

![]() Our period of interest is roughly the first two generations after the Roman invasion of Britain AD 43. This period is one of great changes in the country as it makes the transition into the province of Britannia; it includes the establishment of the road systems, towns and villas, the guerrilla war of Caractacus (in Wales), the rebellion of Boudicca and the final stand of the Caledonians at Mons Graupius (in modern Scotland) in AD83. ![]() We are always looking for recruits to join either our Roman units, British warriors or to live and work within the Vicus itself. We are family orientated and membership is open to anyone, young or old. We are one of the few societies that accepts both Romans and Britons and combines living history and combat for this period. We are also the only UK society that will allow women into our Roman units.
